Cold Front Hits San José
Better get the winter
coat out as a cold front
from Belize is expected
to hit the Central
Valley (San José) and
the Atlantic coast and
will last until
Thursday, according to
predictions by the
Instituto Meteorológico
Nacional (IMN) -
national weather
service.
The cold front is
expected to cool day
temperatures to about 21
Celsius in San José and
26 Celsius in Alajuela
and lot cooler at night.
Rosario Alfaro, an IMN
official, explained that
the cold front will
reduce the rain as there
is less humidity in the
mornings.
Although the rainy
season is not expected
to begin in the Central
Valley until the third
week in April (next
week) - one month
earlier than normal - it
has rained just about
every day in the Central
Valley during the first
13 days of the month.
Alajuela has been hit
hardest by the rain,
accumulating a total of
80.6 millimetres of
water, in contrast to
only 43.5 millimetres a
year ago.
Pavas, west side of San
José, is another area
with lots of rain,
accumulating 67
millimetres of water
compared to only 56.7 in
2007.
Gabriela Chinchilla of
the IMN says the heavy
rain is due to La Niña,
which is in contrast to
El Niño which brings
lots of dry weather.
One way to avoid the
cold and the rain of San
José is to head for the
Pacific coast beaches.
The rainy season on the
Pacific coast won't
begin for another couple
of weeks. |
