Striking Teachers and
Education Authorities To
Meet Today
Following three weeks of
strike by teachers
belonging to the
Asociación de Profesores
de Segunda Enseñanza
(APSE) there is hope of
a solution as union
leaders are expected
today to meet with
officials of the
Ministerio de Educación
Pública (MEP).
The meeting is set for
9:00am this morning and
will be held at the
Defensoría de los
Habitantes (the office
of the Ombudsman) in
Barrio México.
Teachers have been on
strike since March 31
wanting salary parity
with other professionals
and a reduction of the
number of students in
each classroom.
APSE, one of several
teachers unions, failed
to get the support of
their full membership
and other unions in a
strike action that has
seen little negative
effect in the classroom.
For his part, the
ministro de Educación,
Leonardo Garnier, has
been very patient and
tolerant of the teachers
on strike. |
