Violence Erupts in
Nicaragua After Ortega
Cancels Votes
PUERTO CABEZAS,
Nicaragua - Legislators
were attacked with
stones and a person died
yesterday in protests
over whether to hold
municipal elections in
areas of the country
still recovering from
Hurricane Felix.
Three members of the
Liberal Constitutional
Party fled Puerto
Cabezas, the largest
town in the North
Atlantic Autonomous
Region, after protesters
threw stones and
threatened them with
knives.
At least one person was
killed and several
injured during election
protests in the town of
Biliwi, said Gen. Omar
Halleslevens, the head
of Nicaragua’s military.
The protests follow
statements by President
Daniel Ortega that three
municipalities hit by
Felix in September are
not prepared to hold
mayoral elections
because of stalled
recovery efforts.
