Women Want Right To Decide on
Abortion
The woman's organization "Colectiva
por el Derecho a Decidir" is
asking for changes to the Costa
Rican Código Penal (penal code)
to make abortion legal.
The group will commemorate
September 28 for legalization of
abortion in Latin America and
the Caribbean, in the cases of
pregnancies resulting from rape
and incest and when the fetus is
found to be malformed.
"The recent advances in Colombia
and Mexico has demonstrated that
though the fight for the
legalization of abortion is
complex, it is possible", said
Adriana Maroto, a spokesperson
for the organization.
The organization is fighting for
the rights of women who, in many
cases have to live through the
torture of carrying their
pregnancy to term, who should
have the right to decide
especially in the case of sexual
violence. The Colectiva says
that women who are forced to
carry to term such pregnancy are
being victimized by the state as
well.
The organization adds that all
pregnancies of minors under the
age of 13 should be considered a
violation and that obligation a
women to carry a pregnancy to
term of a malformed fetus is a
cruel, inhuman and degrading
treatment.
The Colectiva wants women in
such situation to have the right
to choose without being legally
and socially penalized.
