Guatemalans Stand
against Hunger
Social and Farmer
Organizations launched a
national campaign
against malnutrition and
hunger, which affects
more than half of the
population in rural
areas.
According to Leocadio
Juracan of the National
Coordinator of Farmer
Organizations, the main
of objective is to
create awareness that
nutrition is a human
right of all citizens.
A million children under
five years of age suffer
from chronic
malnutrition and 79% are
indigenous, the farm
leader said.
According to the Pan
American Health
Organization Guatemala
presents one of the most
precarious nutrition
situations all of Latin
America.
On the other hand 98
percent of farmers are
only working 43 percent
of fertile soils,
Juracan pointed out.
Magali Cano of the
National Nutrition
Network said the
situation was caused by
price hikes of basic
foods, lack of access to
natural resources and
unemployment.
The World Food Program
discovered that 118 of
332 municipalities in
Guatemala can be
classified as highly
vulnerable in terms of
nutrition and 57 others
are also high. |
