Guatemalan Government to
Upgrade Security during
Elections
Guatemalan authorities
will increase security
during the second round
of elections on November
4, especially in the
municipalities where
violence is a latent
risk.
According to Government
Minister Adela Camacho
de Torrebiarte, special
forces will be ready to
go immediately to the
scenes of disturbances.
The troops will also
provide protection to
the candidates for the
presidency and the vice
presidency who will be
voted in the second
round: Alvaro Colom and
Rafael Espada, of Unidad
Nacional de la
Esperanza; and Otto
Perez Molina and Ricardo
Castillo Sinibaldi, of
Partido Patriota.
In addition, the
National Civil Police
will deploy thousands of
agents in cities, roads
and outside polling
stations from November
1, when the patron
saint's festivities
begin in several
municipalities, until
after the elections.
Authorities warned they
would not allow any
incident to boycott the
election of the
president and the vice
president of the
