Referendum
Some 500 observers from
the Organization of
American States (OAS)
and many more from other
world organizations will
be travelling to Costa
Rica to supervise the
Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States -
referendum vote.
2Costa Ricans will be
going to the voting
booth on Sunday October

of the trade deal.
According to Tribunal
Supremo de Elecciones (TSE)
president Luis Antonio
Sobrado the delegation
OAS delegation will be
headed by the
organization's Secretary
General José Miguel
Insulza.
The Organization of
American States brings
together the nations of
the Western Hemisphere
to strengthen
cooperation on
democratic values,
defend common interests
and debate the major
issues facing the region
and the world.
Costa Rica's former
president, Miguel Angel
Rodríguez, headed the
OAS briefly, until his
resignation forced by
corruption scandals in
Costa Rica.
The OAS is the region’s
principal multilateral
forum for strengthening
democracy, promoting
human rights, and
confronting shared
problems such as
poverty, terrorism,
illegal drugs and
corruption.
