Former Panamanian
President Again in Drug
Scandal
Panamanian ex President
Mireya Moscoso was
implicated in another
drug trafficking scandal
Wednesday when it was
revealed that an alleged
Colombian capo, arrested
on Saturday, received
privileged treatment
during her
administration.
Nelson Urrego, who
bought an island in
Panama, obtained his
Panamanian identity and
bank accounts without
difficulty in barely 24
hours, on November 13,
2003, according to an
official report
published by Panama
America daily.
Urrego was arrested for
money laundering and he
is allegedly a prominent
member of the North
Valley Cartel in
Colombia.
Moscoso and her ex
Assistant Finance
Minister Publio Cortes
told the newspaper they
did not know how Urrego
entered the country and
were unaware of any
irregularity with the
way he acquired Chapera
island and other
properties worth 12
million dollars.
Earlier, former
Colombian soccer player
Freddy Rincon, arrested
in Brazil for money
laundering, said Mireya
Moscoso helped him
invest in a company that
turned out to be
trafficking in drugs.
The ex president denied
any connection with
Rincon and her lawyer
said she would sue him. |
