Electricity Costly in El
Salvador
A strong dependence on
heat energy has caused
Salvadorans to pay
record prices for
electricity although
authorities denied on
Wednesday that they
raised prices.
Statistics from Unidad
de Transacciones, that
operates the domestic
electricity market, set
the price per megawatt
hour 14 percent higher
than last year, blamed
on the climbing oil
prices at the world
market.
Although hydroelectric
and geothermic energy
are cheaper, oil
generates nearly half of
El Salvador's
electricity.
The government confirmed
the price in force since
June 2006, but
adjustments planned for
October could change the
