Brazilian diplomat sent
to Monaco to discuss
extradition of former
banker
The Brazilian government
has sent a diplomat to
Monaco to discuss the
extradition of former
banker Salbatore
Cacciola who was
captured by the Interpol
in Monaco on Saturday,
Minister of Justice
Tarso Genro said on
Monday.
Maria Laura da Rocha, an
official from the
Foreign Relations
Ministry, went to Monaco
to negotiate the
extradition of Cacciola,
who was captured while
trying to enter Monaco.
The Brazilian government
will do all it can to
extradite the former
banker, Rocha said.
In 2005, Cacciola was
sentenced by a Brazilian
Court to a 13-year
prison term for
embezzling public money
and for fraud in the
administration of the
investment bank Marka.
The former banker had
been wanted by the
police for seven years.
He was once tracked to
Italy, but the Brazilian
authorities could not
extradite him because he
also has Italian
citizenship.
That Brazil and Monaco
do not have an
extradition treaty will
not be an obstacle,
Genro said, adding that
he expected to deliver
all the necessary
paperwork for the
extradition up to the
end of the week. He did
not eliminate the
possibility of going to
Monaco himself if his
presence helps in the
process.
An appointment with the
Monegasque judge in
charge of the case was
scheduled for Tuesday,
and the Brazilian
government will have 40
days to negotiate the
