Nicaragua Creates
Emergency Funds for
Hurricane Felix Victims
Nicaragua's legislature,
the National Assembly,
Monday approved to
establish emergency
funds as part of the
nation's 2007 budget for
the Hurricane victims.
In Nicaragua, 180,000
people were left
homeless by Hurricane
Felix, which made
landfall on the northern
Caribbean coast on Sept.
4.
Walmaro Gutierrez,
deputy from Sandinista
Party said the funds
would be used to buy
food and give the
affected regions a roof
over their heads.
Nicaraguan President
Daniel Ortega presented
a measure worth 500
million Cordobas (us$28
million dollars) to the
legislature, where it
was swiftly approved
with 73 votes in favor.
"Opposing such a measure
is opposing humanitarian
aid that the government
is sending to the
victims of Hurricane
Felix," Gutierrez said.
Some 215 million
Cordobas (us$12 million
dollars) will be used
for the victims'
immediate needs while
some 100 million
Cordobas (us$5.6 million
dollars) will be used
delivered to the
National Disaster
Prevention System and 34
million (us$1.9 million
dollars) will help to
the Transport and
Infrastructure Ministry
repair highways in the
worst hit North Atlantic
autonomous region.
The Family and Education
Ministries and the
Emergency Social
Investment Fund will
receive smaller amounts.
