Wants Peaceful Elections
After a violent
electoral campaign, the
Guatemalan press
highlights Saturday a
message by President
Oscar Berger calling
people to vote
peacefully and
candidates to respect
elections' results.
"Berger requests respect
the majority
willingness," headlined
"El Periodico" newspaper
a day before general
polls.
The daily reproduces the
letter wrote by the
statesman, who asks
people for a peaceful
and responsible vote for
Guatemala, as well as
makes these elections a
national civic party.
The president's message
is repeated in all radio
most important news
reports prior to polls,
where the people will
elect the country's
president and vice
president, as well as
deputies, mayors and
municipal councils.
The September 9
elections have been
preceded by a violent
campaign, which killed
over 50 people among
candidates, activists or
