Bus Fare Hike Approved
The Autoridad Reguladora
de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep)
yesterday approved a
rate increase on 420 bus
routes, following a hike
request by the Consejo
de Transporte Público (CTP)
for 567 of the 750
routes around the
country.
The increase is on
average 3.83% which in
real terms means between
¢5 and ¢305 colones
depending on the route.
The increase request was
based on allowing bus
operators to cover
increased costs such as
fuel, salaries, exchange
rate and changes in the
Índice de Precios al
Consumidor (Consumer
Pricing Index).
The last increase in bus
fares was in 2006, as
the Aresep took into
account the changes
between August of 2006
and this year.
The increase is expected
to take effect beginning
on Tuesday at the
latest, as it is
required to be published
in the official
government publication
La Gaceta first.
Some of the routes that
will see a fare increase
are the Sabana Estadio/Cementerio
inter-urban bus, San
José-Santa Ana, Pavas,
San José-Grecia, San
José-Heredia, San
José-Liberia, San José-Peñas
Blancas, San José-Playa
Tamarindo, San José-Quepos
and San José-Limón.
