Heavy Rain Predicted
Starting This Afternoon
Though Hurricane Felix
will not make it to
Costa Rica, the effects
of the hurricane will be
felt, however.
According to the
Instituto Meteorológico
Nacional (IMN) - the
weatherman - beginning
this afternoon (Monday)
and into the night,
Costa Rica will be hit
by heavy rains and
strong winds, as an
indirect effect of
Felix.
The warning by the IMN
is in effect for the
Pacific South and
Central and the Central
Valley (San José) areas.
However, Felix may take
a different path and not
effect Costa Rica so
severely. The IMN says
that Felix could change
course over the next
several hours.
Notwitstanding, the
seasonal rains will
continue to fall on the
country and causing
damage in all areas.
A number of bridges and
sections of highways
have been damaged due to
the heavy rains of
Saturday. One of the
most affected was the
Bernardo Soto the
section of the
Interamerican highway
that runs west of the
international airport,
at the Manolo's
crossing, where five
landslides occurred on
part of a 200 metres
stretch of the highway,
forcing the closing of
the highway at 5:00pm
and reopened yesterday
morning, according to
the Policía del Tránsito.
Landslides in Escazú
since Thursday caused
traffic chaos on the
General Cañas and all
roads leading to and
from Escazú, spilling
over into Pavas,
Rohrmoser and La Sabana.
Getting to and from
Heredia has also a
nightmare over the last
couple of days as
several of the small
bridges leading to and
from the city of
"flowers" were damaged
by the rushing waters.
Traffic officials are
asking drivers to arm
themselves with patience
as the rains affect many
routes all over the
country, forcing their
temporary closure as
work crews clean up the
mess left behind and/or
make repairs. |
