Cuba Ready for Election
Nominations
Cuba has all in place
Friday for Saturday's
beginning of nominations
in 100 neighborhoods for
municipal government
candidates; this first
stage of 50,600 such
meetings which will
continue until September
26.
In this nomination stage
for the October
elections, mentally
competent residents over
16 nominate between 2
and 8 candidates from
among themselves,
without discrimination
of any kind: gender,
race or political
(including Communist
Party), and even
self-proposals are
accepted.
Choice of candidates is
carried out directly by
raised hand vote.
From September 26 until
the election,
single-sheet biographies
of the candidates are
posted publicly in the
pertinent districts;
this is the only
campaign propaganda
allowable by law in
Cuba.
As Maria Esther Reus,
president of the
National Electoral
Commission, explained to
Prensa Latina, this
nomination of candidates
at local assemblies is
the most important
moment of the Cuban
electoral process,
because this is the
manifestation of the
reality of Cuban
citizens' active and
democratic participation
in the general
elections. |
