Alvaro Colom Tops
Guatemala Polls
Alvaro Colom, candidate
for the Guatemalan
presidency postulated by
National Unity of Hope (UNE),
leads vote intentions by
three-points over his
closest rival, according
to a poll published
Friday.
The survey, carried out
by the Borge and
Associate Company for
"El Periodico" daily,
shows Colom with 30.7
percent, closely
followed by Otto Perez
Molina, from the
Patriotic Party, with
27.7 percent.
Third is Alejandro
Giammattei, from the
Grand National Alliance,
with 10.5 percent, while
fourth is Nobel Peace
Prizewinner Rigoberta
Menchu, from the "Encuentro
por Guatemala" Party,
with 5.7 percent.
The poll took place
between August 13-26 and
about 8,000 people
throughout the country
were interviewed.
This is the third
postulation to the
presidency for the UNE
aspirant, after
attending the 1999 and
2003 elections.
Elections in Guatemala
will be on September 9
to elect president, vice
president, deputies and
municipal councils, but
survey so far indicates
that the presidency will
be decided in runoff
elections on November 4. |
