Rain Is The Greatest
Enemy of Roads, Says
MOPT Minister
The heavy rainy season
has caused much damage
to the national road
system says the ministra
de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT),
Karla González, who
assures that the rain is
the number one enemy of
the road infrastructure.
"Definitively one of the
things that most damages
the road surface is
water, on two levels,
first when it falls and
second when it
accumulates at the side
of the road, gully or
sewers", said the
minister.
Minister González was
emphatic that whatever
the reason, water is the
enemy on the quality and
durability of the roads.
The minister added that
the lack of maintenance
for the last 20 years on
the road network adds to
the problem and the road
resurfacing being
currently carried out is
of short duration since
most of the roads
require a complete
overhaul.
The minister explained
that during the last 20
years there has not been
regular maintenance to
the roads and in some
cases the road has
outlasted its lifespan.
And that is the reason
for the many potholes,
which in reality should
not be filled in, but
the whole road rebuilt.
The problem, according
to the minister, is
time. The MOPT has to do
something in the
meantime, like filling
in the pothole, while
the process of tendering
a contract continues.
"We know that the
pothole will reappear,
but we have to provide a
solution to drivers",
