20 people kidnapped
in Colombia
At least 20 people were
kidnapped Thursday
allegedly by Colombia's
Revolutionary Armed
Forces (FARC), officials
said.
The kidnapping took
place when the civilians
were traveling through
the northeastern region
to the rural areas of
the northwestern
Antioquia Department,
said Nuris Escobar,
government secretary of
Taraza, a municipality
in Antioquia province.
"The latest version we
have after meeting with
police lieutenant is
that the guerrilla have
arrested 20 people in La
Caucana. The victims
were on their way to
check the growth of the
rubber trees," Escobar
added.
Taraza's mayor Reinaldo
Posso said FARC
guerrilla troops
frequently transit the
region and some peasants
blamed the rebels for
the kidnapping.
FARC, the largest rebel
group in Colombia, is
persistently fighting
against President Alvaro
Uribe's "democratic
security policy" that
seeks to re-establish
internal order and
protect civilians from
the depredations of
illegal armed groups.
