Guatemala: Police
Commanders Subpoenaed
Guatemala's Attorney
General's Office has
summoned high-ranking
officers of the PNC
(National Civil Police)
to declare about the
alleged involvement of
agents from the corps in
the extrajudicial
execution of five
youngsters.
Crimes against Life
Attorney Alvaro Matus,
who is handling the
case, confirmed that
three captains will be
questioned about this
killing which triggered
a serious crisis within
the PNC, including the
resignation of its chief
Julio Hernandez.
Another 30 members of
the PNC security team
leadership were also
summoned.
On September 21,
youngsters aged 17 to
23, all residents of El
Gallito neighborhood,
were kidnapped in broad
day light and their
bodies riddled with
bullets and signs of
strangulation were found
later in a forest on the
outskirts of Guatemala
City.
Denunciations by their
families and an
investigation led
authorities to order the
capture of inspector
Wilson Tobar and agent
Sabino Ramos, both
belonging to the escort
team of the PNC chief.
Hours later, the PNC
chief was forced to
resign and the Attorney
General's Office ruled
he cannot leave the
country.
This is the second
crisis faced by
Guatemalan police since
February, when several
agents, including the
chief of the Criminal
Investigation
Department, took part in
the killing of three
Salvadorian deputies and
their driver. |
