Europeans to Invest in
Panama Canal
European Union
Commissioner for
External Relations
Benita Ferrero-Waldner
voiced the EU's wish to
help finance the
expansion of the Panama
Canal.
In a private visit to
the Canal Monday,
Ferrero-Waldner was to
meet with President
Martín Torrijos and
Foreign Minister Samuel
Lewis Navarro to offer a
300 million Euro ($428
million) long-term
credit through the
European Investment
Bank.
Panama estimates it will
cost $5.2 billion to
enlarge the installation
through state funds and
official accords.
The EU official began a
Central American tour
Saturday that includes
Honduras, El Salvador
and Nicaragua.
Besides political
dialogue, the goals are
to arrange a free trade
agreement with the
region and boost
cooperation accords to
encourage development. |
