Venezuela Needs New
Constitution
The Venezuelan
Constitutional reform is
a need for the
revolutionary process,
to boost a larger power
distribution, the
Republic's Vice
President Jorge
Rodriguez stated
Thursday.
"The changes in the
Constitution," he said,
"represent a strategy to
deepen the policy of
benefits to sectors in
need that President Hugo
Chavez boosts."
Rodriguez told
"Panorama" newspaper
that if that instrument
is not approved, that
will be “a brutal
detention of the work of
all projects undertaken
by this government." The
proposal to change the
Constitution's 69
articles "is
revolutionary to
distribute the power,"
said the vice president.
As to arguments that
consider necessary to
call a Constituent
Assembly, he recalled
that in this case it is
not a new Constitution
but to improve the
existing one.
Rodriguez criticized the
US press" positions on
the reform, which claim
its approval will take
Chavez to be an
autocrat.
The initiative to change
the Constitution,
subjected to the popular
consent in the December
2 referendum,
strengthens bases for
the transition to a
socialist model in the
country.
