Ecuador: U.S. treatment
of Ecuadorian president
"ignorant"
QUITO - Ecuador's
Foreign Minister Maria
Fernanda Espinosa told
media on Tuesday that
the discourteous
treatment President
Rafael Correa received
at Miami airport was a
sign of the United
States ignorance and
arrogance.
"The U.S. failed to
respect the fundamental
principle of immunity of
jurisdiction for a head
of state, according to
which simply showing his
identification would
mean he is given the
respectful and
appropriate treatment
that is his due,"
Espinosa said.
"Administrative
procedures do not
preclude the obligation
to recognize heads' of
state immunity. There is
no apology or
justification," Espinosa
said.
Espinosa ruled out that
the problem had been
caused by other
problems. However, she
said the accident won't
damage the country's
relations with the
United States.
The minister also
recalled maltreatment
Ecuador's vice president
Lenin Moreno received in
Atlanta and New York
airports in March,
saying "they dragged him
out of his wheelchair
and shamed him
publicly."
Moreno has been in a
wheelchair since the
1990's after suffering a
gunshot injury during an
armed robbery.
