Bolivia Positive After
Tense Week
The resumption of the
Constituent Assembly and
approval of two
controversial bills are
renewing hopes in
Bolivia, after a week
marked by tension and
intolerance.
The Assembly resumed
sessions Friday with
concrete proposals to
enable the new
Constitution before
December 14.
A total of 145 Assembly
members replied to the
call to meet at the new
headquarters in the
Sucre Military Elysium,
and the plenum had the
necessary minimum quorum
to restart
deliberations, despite
attempts to sabotage the
forum.
This week in Sucre was
marked by aggressions
and insults against
indigenous people who
demanded the reopening
of the Assembly, but
native groups began
arriving Thursday to
guarantee the
functioning of the
meeting at any cost.
In addition, the
government this week
denounced a seditious,
anti-democratic plot
encouraged by the
leadership of the rebel
departments, through the
so called Democratic
National Council (CONALDE).
Governmental spokesman
Alex Contreras denounced
that the second point of
the CONALDE resolution
advocates ó a group of
actions to stir up
confrontation and
