Nicaraguan Women March
Against Violence
Nicaraguan women from
across the nation will
gather in Managua Friday
to mark International
Day for Elimination of
Violence against Women
and denounce abuses to
which they are subject,
organizers announced.
According to the call
released by the Women
against Violence
Network, the marchers
will gather at
University Avenue to
publicly express their
opinions about the
situation faced by women
at home and within
society.
We consider the date
appropriate to denounce
daily violations
suffered by Nicaraguan
women through different
forms of violence,
whether physical,
psychological, sexual,
economic, social or
institutional, the text
says.
According to figures
released by the Network,
57 women have been
killed by their
partners, spouses or
former spouses so far
this year, apart from
hundreds of cases of
sexual abuse that have
remained unpunished.
Friday's demonstration
will be an opportunity
to protest the
penalization of
therapeutic abortion in
Nicaragua, a measure
that, according to
feminist organizations,
has led to the death of
about 80 women since its
approval last year.
The International Day
for Elimination of
Violence against Women
has been marked on
November 25 since 1981. |
