Jose Marti Park in
Quetzaltenango
Authorities in
Guatemala's second major
city, Quetzaltenango,
are planning to create a
park and a children's
library in honor of
Cuban National Hero Jose
Marti.
Mayor Rolando Barrientos,
who was recently
reelected for a second
term, told Prensa Latina
that the city lacks
enough places for
children and
adolescents.
He noted the importance
of having an area
dedicated to Jose Marti,
who left a deep imprint
as a teacher and a
writer in Guatemala,
where he lived from
March 1877 to July 1878.
Author Victor Hugo Cruz,
one of the promoters of
the project, said his
book Guatemala deals
with Marti's stay in the
country.
In order to materialize
the initiative, a
commission headed by
Barrientos and made up
of Juan Jose Gramajo,
director of the Western
Culture House, and
Councilman Carlos
Pereira, was set up.
The commission will be
supported by
intellectuals and
researchers on Jose
Marti's life and work
during his stay in this
Central American
country.
The park and the library
will be built in three
stages, the first of
which will consist of
unveiling a bust of Jose
Marti on May 19, 2008,
on the 113th anniversary
of his death in combat.
According to Mayor
Barrientos, it will also
be a great opportunity
to remodel the Jose
Marti Avenue, named
after the Cuban hero on
January 28, 1953, to
commemorate his 100th
birthday. |
