From Cop To Prostitute
She was a police office
in the Dominican
Republic, earning us$100
a month. However, in
Costa Rica, she could
earn more than 20 times
that amount and without
having to work in full
uniform under the
blazing Caribbean sun,
preferring to work in
skimpy clothing,
pleasing clients,
monthly foreigners.
The case is of a 27 year
old woman, whose
identity was not
revealed by Immigration
officials, who was one
of more than a dozen
prostitutes detained
over the weekend Playa
Jacó, during a police
raid.
The woman said she left
the Villa Duarte de la
Policía Nacional in the
Dominican Republic to
work in a Costa Rican
beauty salon owned by
her aunt.
The woman said she got
tired of earning only
us$300 a week cutting
hair, etc. and slowly
began to frequent night
clubs (strip bars) and
night spots and found
that she could earn much
more, well with her
smile.
The woman, like many of
the 100 foreigners
questioned during the
raids, is married to a
Costa Rican national and
is in the process of
obtaining her residency.
Like many of the other
women, they have never
met their husband, in
her case she is married
to a 67 year old farmer.
Francisco Castaing, head
of the immigration
police, said the woman
is only one of the many
foreigners who come to
Costa Rica, on the guise
of working for a family
member, to become
prostitutes.
Castaing added, in their
investigation, they
found a network of
"coyotes" who arrange
for the women to come to
Costa Rica to work as
prostitutes, marrying a
Costa Rican to legalize
their status.
Castaing said that the
concerned of authorities
is that slowly Costa
Rica is being used for
white slavery. |
