Seven Burned to Death in
Nicaragua Highway Crash
Seven people burned to
death on Sunday when an
intercity coach and a
private van crashed
head-on in northern
Nicaragua, police said.
The van carrying
flammable paint products
rolled under the coach
with 40 aboard on the
Pan-American Highway in
northern Nicaragua. The
crash triggered a fire
in the paint jars.
Four people, including
the assistant driver,
burned to death on the
coach heading for
capital Managua. Three
of the four people in
the van died.
The coach driver said he
had been driving at 60
kph within the speed
limit, while the van had
been speeding. "I tried
to avoid the impact, but
it was impossible," he
said.
National Police experts
have been sent to the
scene to determine the
cause of the accident.
The injured were taken
to hospital in Managua.
