Arias Defends Sanchez
Costa Rica president,
Oscarr Arias Sánchez,
has come out in defence
of legislator Fernando
Sánchez, who is facing
possible disciplinary
action from the
Legilsative Assembly for
his role in the writing
of a memo that detailed
drastic action to be
taken by the Arias
government against TLC
opposition.
The memo, leaked to the
press, ended with the
resignation of COsta
Rica' second
vice-president, Kevin
Casas, who co-wrote the
memo with Sánchez.
"He made a mistake, but
that the courage and
humility to recognize
it; Sánchez is repentful
and for that it takes
courage. No one is
perfect, we all make
mistakes and with
courage he recognized
it, may the Tribunals
can consider such", said
president Arias.
Sánchez, a member of the
Partido Liberación
Nacional (PLN) - the
ruling party - could
lose is seat in the
Legislature if the
Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE) finds
him guilty of his
actions.
The Procuraduría de
Ética has been
investigating Sánchez
since the memo came to
light, which referred to
actions to be taken by
the Arias administration
during the Tratado de
Libre Comercio (TLC)
referendum held on
October 7.
Fernando Sánchez and
president Arias are
related on the maternal
side of the family. |
