International Drug
Traffic Hard
Nicaraguan authorities
gave a strong blow to
international drug
traffic by confiscating
almost two million
dollars and an
undetermined amount of
drugs in two operations
carried out in the north
and south of the
country.
Lt. Col. Alvaro Ibarra,
Nicaraguan Army
spokesman, confirmed to
Prensa Latina that
military and the
National Police
confiscated more than
1.91 million dollars in
Rivas Department, 64
miles south of Managua.
The sum was hidden
inside a tank of
liquefied gas
transported in the trunk
of a vehicle whose
driver escaped.
Ibarra said everything
indicates that the money
was to be taken out of
the country across the
southern border, and was
presumably related to
international drug
traffic.
Ibarra also reported the
seizure of three cistern
trucks, suspected of
carrying narcotics, on
the Pan-American
Highway, in the west of
the country.
Nicaragua is used as a
natural corridor for
drug traffic circulating
from South America to
the United States, the
main world market.
This year Nicaraguan
authorities have
confiscated some six
tons of cocaine from
international cartels,
and arrested dozens of
people, among them
several foreigners. |
