Gas Hike on Friday
Get ready for another
round of gasoline price
increases, that is
expected to go into
effect Friday after
notice being published
Thursday in the official
government publication,
La Gaceta.
The price at the pumps
will jump ¢24 colones
for a litre of diesel,
¢5 colones for super and
¢8 colones for regular.
The adjustment was
approved by the
Autoridad Reguladora de
los Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
- the regulator of
public prices and
services - to compensate
Recope (the national
refinery) for the
increased costs of crude
oil on international
markets.
With the approval, the
cost of a litre of
diesel will go from the
current ¢462 to ¢486 a
litre; super from ¢543
to ¢548; and, regular
from ¢527 to ¢535.
Recope is expected to
make request for another
increase this Friday as
part of the pricing
formula method that
occurs the second Friday
of each month.
The Aresep press office
says that the notice
will be published on
Thursday and prices go
in effect at 12:01am
Friday at all gasoline
stations in the country.
With the latest
increase, the gap
between diesel and
gasoline prices is
getting smaller. In the
past there had always
been a great difference
between diesel and
gasoline prices,
prompting many buyers to
opt for diesel powered
vehicles.
Currently there are some
157.000 vehicles powered
by diesel, mainly buses,
heavy and light trucks
and a number of
passenger vehicles.
Diesel fuel is also the
main power source to run
electric generators
during the dry season.
