Nicaragua Solving Energy Crisis
Nicaragua will resort to fuel oil powered
electricity generators and massive distribution
of fluorescent light bulbs to handle the energy
crisis in the country, President Daniel Ortega
announced in this capital on Friday.
The president reported that power generators
with capacity to generate 60 megawatts will
arrive in the country from Venezuela and Cuba by
the end of 2007.
Unlike the 32 stations that have been sent from
Caracas and Havana, and have been operating
since March using diesel, the new equipment will
use fuel oil, a cheaper fuel, he explained.
Ortega asserted that negotiations with Brazil,
Canada, and Taiwan are also in progress, for
them to send, "urgently, stations that work with
bunker (fuel oil)."
The head of State announced that as part of the
measures adopted by the Sandinista government,
almost two million fluorescent light bulbs will
be distributed, starting in June, to replace
incandescent light bulbs.
