Transport Strike in Guatemala
Drivers and passenger service pilots paralyzed
transportation in the northern zone of Guatemala
City to protest the violence to which they are
subjected daily.
During their march, the workers demanded
Wednesday that the National Civil Police provide
a real program to guarantee their safety, as the
government project of combined army-police
guards for urban buses has not slowed crime.
They complained about increasing attacks and
extortion by juvenile gangs, known as maras,
which kill drivers who refuse to give them the
money collected during their working day.
At least 17 sector workers, including drivers
and assistants, have been killed so far this
year, informed Luis Gomez, president of the
Truckers Association of Guatemala City.
Gomez pointed out that one-third of the 3,000
units suffer extortion every day, and 240
assaults are reported each day on capital
routes.
