Guatemala Fights for its US Emigres
Guatemalan authorities currently have little
possibility of regularizing the situation of
over 700,000 illegal people living in the US
under the threat of being deported.
"I am less optimistic because radical groups are
engaged in internal discussion which is
difficult to be conciliated," Guatemalan Foreign
Minister Gert Rosenthal said.
This country s ambassador to Washington
Guillermo Castillo coincided there were few
possibilities of a drastic change in benefit of
the majorities.
According to estimates, nearly 1.5 million
Guatemalans live today in the United States,
most of them with in a precarious situation and
the risk of raids and repatriations.
Despite the difficult panorama, Guatemalan
authorities continue lobbying in the US, while
Deputy Foreign Minister Marta Altolaguirre is
making a one-week visit to that northern
country, to meet with officials and leaders of
migrants.
