Chile, Ecuador defend current sea borders with Peru
Chile and Ecuador on Thursday restated their determination to defend their current sea borders with Peru.

In a joint statement, the Chilean and Ecuadorian governments said the current borders between the three countries were fixed by the two accords signed in 1952 and 1954.

The two accords have remained "in full force," said the statement, issued after the meeting between Chilean Foreign Minister Alejandro Foxley Rioseco and his Ecuadorian counterpart Maria Fernanda Espinoza.

However, Chile and Ecuador do not intend to "revive problems, to generate controversy or to generate divisions and distance between neighboring countries and friendly countries," Foxley told a press conference here.

Peru disputes the ownership of a 30,000 square km area in the Pacific Ocean set by the accords. Chile says the issue has been resolved and is closed for discussion. Some Peruvians also accuse Ecuador of violating the sea border between the two countries.
