Pope
and Lula Meet Privately
Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva
and Pope Benedict XVI held a private meeting on
Thursday in Bandeirantes Palace in Sao Paulo.
Presidential advisors close to the meeting told
journalists that the leaders spoke about the
importance of family and the relations between
Church and State.
After the discussion, the pope attended Lula s
presentation of a new stamp dedicated to this
pastoral visit to Brazil.
On his return to the Sao Bento Monastery in Sao
Paulo, Benedict XVI began a series of meetings
with leaders of other religions and Brazilian
politicians.
During his audience, Sao Paulo Gov. Jose Serra
gave the pope a letter requesting beatification
of a Brazilian nun.
For tonight the pope plans a meeting with
Brazilian Catholic youth at the Pacaembu
Stadium, where there will be choreographies and
homage to him.
