Referendum To Be Held on September 23rd
The Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) has set
a date of Sunday 23 September, as the
day that Costa Ricans get to vote on the Tratado
de Libre Comercio (TLC) - free trade agreement
with the United States, Central America and the
Dominican Republic.
The TSE will be spending some ¢1.5 billion
colones (us$2.9 million dollars) on the
referendum vote.
Héctor Fernández, the director of the oficina de
Coordinación de Programas Electorales,
emphasized the the date decision by the tribunal
is tentative and "other factors" could mean a
change on the date, though no details were
given.
The final date for the vote will be confirmed
next month following meetings of TSE officials
and the Ministerio de Hacienda (revenue
ministry) and the Contraloría (Comptrollers
office).
