Venezuela: Registration for New
Party beyond Expectations
The number of applicants
registered to become members of
Venezuela's Socialist United
Party (613,000) has exceeded
expectations, Vice President
Jorge Rodriguez said.
The figure was reached in the
first two weekends of the six
devoted to registration of
people interested in joining
PSUV, a political organization
proposed by President Hugo
Chavez.
The initiative is aimed at
unifying forces of about 30
parties and left wing
organizations which support the
process of socialist
construction in Venezuela.
At least 612,678 Venezuelans
have expressed their intention
to join what is considered the
most important party in the
country's history, and the
estimate was 400,000, Rodriguez
said in a press conference, as
he highlighted "this response
given by the women and men who
accompany the revolutionary
process."
Registration is expected to
conclude on June 3rd, with over
two million applicants.
