Formula 1 Race Cars Closed Safe
Driving Week
Hundreds of Costa Ricans, the
majority young, were out to see
the Formula 1 (F-1) exhibition
in La Sabana yesterday as the
Próspero Fernández highway was
closed off from the east end of
the Sabana park to the Pavas
turn off.
The event was sponsored by Red
Bull and was at the closing of
the Semana de Seguridad Vial
(safe driving week) aimed at the
young.
Formula 1 cars are high output
vehicles generating massive
power - over 900 horsepower -
from small engines that can hit
a high speed of 300 kilometres
per hour.
According to officials of the
Ministerio de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT) and the
Consejo de Seguridad Vial (Cosevi)
the idea was to show the young
that to race on the streets
certain conditions have to exist
and that "our streets are not
made for running", said Karla
González, ministra de
Trasnportes.
"The MOPT knows that young
drivers like to drive fast on
our roads, but must understand
that it can only be done under
certain conditions and we have
to speak the language of the
young so that they understand",
said González.
The exhibition showed those in
attendance the security measures
used in race cars, like the six
point seat belt system, while a
regular car only use a two point
buckle system and that racing is
for closed circuits, like that
in La Guacima, and not the open
road.
Yesterday's exhibition took the
race cars to a speed of 200 KMh
on the straightway on the closed
off portion of the highway in
front of the La Contaloría
building.
