Banco Nacional Online Customers
Target of Phishing
If you are a customer of the
Banco Nacional de Costa Rica (BNCR),
be careful to respond to emails
that have surfaced on the
internet requesting that you
click on the link to update your
account or lose access.
The link takes you to a fake
page that appears similar to
that of the Banco Nacional,
which asks you for your login
and password information.
The message is slick and can be
devastating for the
unsuspecting, for once the login
and password are entered on the
fake page, the person or persons
behind the email can now access
and empty out the account.
José Francisco Araya of the
Banco Nacional said that neither
his bank or other banks in Costa
Rica have the policty of asking
for "sensitive" information,
like access codes, PIN numbers,
etc in any email.
The action is called "phishing"
and Araya confirmed that is the
second such attempt to defraud
BNCR customers.
A couple of months ago, the
Banco de Costa Rica (BCR)
customers came under a similar
attack. It is not known if the
BNCR emails are from the same
source of the BCR emails.
The term phishing comes from the
contraction of "password
harvesting fishing".
Araya said that the Banco
Nacional, in coordination with
RACSA, access to the page in the
email link has been blocked and
that the legitimate URL's by the
bank are www.bncr.fi.cr,
www.bnonline.fi.cr and
www.empresarial.fi.cr.
