Nicaragua Squares off with IMF
Nicaragua and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) start in this capital on Monday negotiations for an economic plan in which Sandinistas authorities give priority to social expenses over macro-economic requirements.

Since his return to power on January 10, President Daniel Ortega has condemned all IMF neoliberal policies with Nicaragua during the last 16 years, which, according to him, are responsible for the high levels of poverty gripping the country.

The Sandinista leader also announced recently that the Central American nation will get rid of the international organization within five years.

Ortega stated that liberation from the IMF will a blessing for Nicaraguans, and will be also be a relief for the financial entity to dissociate from a government which defends the interests of its poor.
