Nicaragua's Opposition Pushes
Reforms
The three main opposition
parties in Nicaragua will try to
reduce the state apparatus
through constitutional reforms
next week.
The three promoters, Alianza
Liberal Nicaragüense, Liberal
Constitucionalista and
Movimiento Renovador Sandinista,
intend to cut Supreme Court
seats from 16 to 8, Election
Council from seven to three and
Congress by 20 seats, leaving 72
provincial representatives.

Nicaragua has banned consecutive
presidential reelection, but the
MRS intends to totally ban
reelection, while the PLC will
call to raise votes need to
become president to above 35
percent.
The PLC will also try to reduce
the presidential term from the
current five years to four, and
merge general and municipal
elections.
A constitutional reform demands
60 percent of the 92-member
National Assembly and approval
in two periods.
Congressional membership is
divided as follows: the
Sandinistas (38 seats plus three
allies), PLC (25), ALN (22), MRS
(3) and ex President Enrique
Bolanos (1)..
