TSE Ready For
Referendum, Waiting Out
Constitutional Court
Decision
Come October 7,
2.651.000 Costa Ricans
will be eligible to cast
their vote to determine
the fate of the Tratado
de Libre Comercio *TLC)
- free trade agreement
with the United States.
The Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE)
announced the numbers
after the close "padrón
electoral" - the
official voters list -
was compiled.
The TSE has called
October 7th the date for
the vote, however, that
is all subject a
Constitutional Court (Sala
IV) decision on the
questions raised on the
constitutionality of the
trade deal.
The court decision is
expected by July 12.
Héctor Fernández, of the
Programas Electorales
del TSE, said that the
TSE feels like the
athletes waiting to get
out there and give it
all.
So, if the Sala IV does
not have any
constitutional
objections, the
referendum will continue
as scheduled for Sunday
October 7, however, that
can change on July 12,
The cost to hold the
referendum is ¢1.4
billion colones (us$2.8
million dollars).
The numbers released by
the TSE indicate that of
the total 2.651.000
voters, 1.320.000 are
men and 1.331.000 are
women.
