Internet Connection
Problems Continue As
Underwater Cable Repairs
Continue
Though there are reports
that the break in the
underwater internet
cable have been
repaired, problems with
internet connection are
expected to continue
today and possibly over
the weekend.
The break has affected
some 1 million internet
users in Costa Rica, as
problems with the Arcos
and Maya underwater
cables, have slowed down
connection time and
response of the world
wide web.
The slowdown is both in
downloading of web pages
and emails.
Columbus Networks, which
owns a 94% interest in
the Arcos cable is that
it is continuing repairs
in the break at Punto
Fijo, in Venezuela and
other points in the
cable network.
Jorge Fernández,
marketing director at
Columbus said yesterday
that they are still
investigating the cause
of the break.
The company said it
installing a new 5
kilometre section of
fibre optic cable as
part of the repair work
being carried out, in
its efforts to continue
to provide wide band
service to the 19
countries connecting to
the network.
Elbert Durán of the
Instituto Costarricense
de Electricidad (ICE)
and its affiliate RACSA,
said the state telecom
is doing its best to
minimize service
interruption, using
alternative connections
to better connection
speeds lost from the
Arcos damage.
