26 Injured In
Confrontation With
Squatters
Twenty six people were
reported injured in a
confrontation between
private security
personnel and residents
evicted over a property
dispute in Herradura,
north of Playa Jacó
The confrontation
between the evicted and
the North American who
was found to by a court
to be real owner of the
property that had been
occupied illegally for
years has been going on
for more than a week,
where police have tried
to keep things calm.
However, last night, for
reasons yet unknown,
private security agents
hired by the North
American began firing on
the evicted, injuring
26, who were taken to
hospital in Jacó.
The eviction of the
squatters came last
Friday when a court
handed down its decision
that the North American
was the rightful owner
of the parcel of land.
By an order of judge,
Eladio Sánchez, of the
Mayor Cuantía de
Puntarenas, 54 families
who have lived on the
lands for more than 20
years were evicted.
For most, it represented
their life savings
invested in fraud. Some,
say that they have been
making regular monthly
payments on a loan for
their purchase of the
lot and building of a
home.
With resignation and
pain the residents say
their dream go up in
smoke with the court
decision that the lands
legally belong to Edward
Conner.
The residents had used
every legal effort to
stall the inevitable,
including presenting
charges against the
judge.
The evicted feel that
they have been cheated
out of the land and
homes in a process
clouded in doubts and
corruption.
Police were called in to
remove the squatters
last Friday. |
