Guatemala Says No International Mining
Representatives from several grassroots sectors
in Guatemala condemned mining development by
internattionals, an activity causing severe
environmental damage in the country s western
zone.
During a forum in Sipacapa municipality,
residents reiterated their rejection of that
activity, which is being carried out despite
refusal by affected communities.
Local leader Mario Tema recalled that in a
popular consultation on June 18, 2005, the
region s inhabitants opposed open mining of
metals.
Juventina Lopez, representative of the National
Indigenous Coordinating Office, called to defend
the environment, and noted those companies take
out the earth s riches and give nothing to
communities in return, but a deforested,
contaminated territory.
