Nicaragua to Enroll More Disabled voters
Nicaragua's Supreme Electoral Council (CSE)
plans to register more disabled citizens this
year so they can take part in the 2008 municipal
elections, program leader Jose Villavicencio
said Monday.
The CSE currently has 17,000 disabled people on
its rolls, and aims to add a further 80,000 this
year, Villavicencio said. Once that point is
reached, the voter rolls will be updated each
year, he added.
The registration process will help authorities
discover the problems the disabled faced and it
will improve ballot boxes and polling day
procedures accordingly.
"For the 2008 municipal elections, the CSE will
create a better service system for disabled
people," Villavicencio said.
According to the United Nations, there are about
600,000 disabled people in Nicaragua.
