Nicaragua, Costa Rica Strengthen Ties
The
Nicaraguan chancellor, Samuel Santos will meet
his Costa Rican counter part, Bruno Stagno, to
strengthen bilateral relations.
Santos and Stagno will inaugurate a Costa Rican
consulate and reception office for the Direction
of Immigration and for the Labor Ministry.
The Nicaraguan Foreign Affairs minister denied
tensions between the two countries after
assuring that the demand Costa Rica presented to
the International Court of Justice in The Hague
for navigation rights on the San Juan River was
being resolved in a civilized manner.
While Costa Rica acknowledges Nicaraguan
sovereignty over the river it demands permission
of navigation for its armed coast guard, a right
withdrawn in 2001 by the then president, Arnoldo
Aleman (1997-2002).
Decision on the case that has been in the hands
of the International Court of Justice since
September 2005 and is still pending in this
maximum legal institution of the UN.
