Drivers Strike in Guatemala City
Two
hundred bus drivers began a protest in southeast
Guatemala City Tuesday because of rising crime,
assaults and extortion.
The protest, set off by the murder of a
29-year-old driver who refused to pay a daily
road tax demanded by gangs, urged Cabinet
Minister Adela Camacho de Torrebiarte for
measures to guarantee safety or they would call
a national strike.
So far this year more than 60 drivers and
assistants have been killed in muggings for the
$13-$40 demanded to drive, and the Association
of Urban Service Companies estimates 1,300 cases
daily of such extortion and 240 bus attacks.
The situation caused several strikes and
threatens to trigger a crisis due to the
difficulties of finding bus drivers.
