ICE
Union Says It Will Accept Referendum Vote
The
union for the workers of the Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) is getting
ahead of its critics by reaffirming that it will
respect the people's decision of the referendum
vote on the Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) -
free trade agreement with the United States.
The ICE union has been as a strong and vocal
opponent to the trade deal, inciting its
membership to take to the streets in protest of
the TLC and the breaking up of the
telecommunications monopoly.
In a public letter, the representatives of the
ICE union reiterated their commitment to accept
the decision of votes on September 23.
Although the strong union is taking the step to
accepting the public's vote, it said it will
continue to be critical of the government action
to fast track the trade deal in the legislature.
