Nicaragua Begins AIDS
Awareness Campaign
The president of
Nicaragua's AIDS-HIV
Association, Arely Cano,
announced a new campaign
on Monday against the
epidemic to encourage
people to protect
themselves and undergo
tests.
The campaign will warn
people that AIDS is a
reality in Nicaragua and
the world and kills
those it infects if it
is not prevented.
Cano said the results of
a study showed that
Nicaraguans with AIDS
are demanding
employment, as well as
more commitment from the
government and
educators.
"Young women are the
most affected," Cano
said, blaming what she
called a culture of
violence and machismo in
Nicaragua.
"Men tell women that if
they have AIDS it is the
woman who gave it to
him, or that it is proof
she has been with
another man. This
violates women's
rights," Cano said.
The report argues that
male infidelity, and
especially male
bisexuality, is the most
likely route of
transmission to women.
According to the group,
there are 2,754
Nicaraguans with full
blown AIDS and 18,000 to
20,000 who carry HIV,
the virus that causes
AIDS.
